Tom Cruise, center, with director Bryan Singer and writer Chris McQuarrie, secured a supporting actor nod in 2000 for "Magnolia," but lost to Michael Caine in "The Cider House Rules." Cruise also received a nomination for a lead actor Oscar in 1997 for "Jerry Maguire," but was bested by Geoffrey Rush in "Shine." And in 1990 Cruise was nominated for a lead actor Oscar for "Born on the Fourth of July," but was topped by Daniel Day-Lewis in "My Left Foot."
