Pop star Katy Perry's geisha-themed performance at the American Music Awards on Nov. 24 may have drawn the ire of some people, but it doesn't look like it hurt album sales for the week that included the Thanksgiving holiday.
For the seven days ending Dec. 1, purchases of Perry's latest album "Prism," featuring the hit girl-power track "Roar," more than tripled compared with the previous week, propelling it from No. 11 to No. 5 on Billboard album chart.
In raw numbers, "Prism" sold 136,000 copies, an increase of 252% week-to-week, according to Nielsen Soundscan.
Perry was not the only AMA performer to get a boost.
The country star Luke Bryan's "Crash My Party" more than quadrupled its sales to 109,000, and Miley Cyrus' "Bangerz" rose 228% to 79,000 copies.
It's important to note that nearly every album in the top 200 increased for the week, which included the big post-Thanksgiving shopping weekend, so it's difficult to attribute the increases to anything specific. Even so, many AMA performers leapfrogged over competitors. Bryan's record rose to eighth place from 15th, while Cyrus jumped to No. 9 from 16th.
Other albums that may have benefited from the awards show exposure:
- Justin Timberlake's "20/20 Experience: The Complete Experience" rose 349% to 77,000 copies and went to No. 11 from No. 22.
- Florida Georgia Line's "Here's to the Good Times" rose 222% to 69,000 copies, and went to No. 13 from No. 18.
- Imagine Dragons' "Night Visions" rose 185% to 65,000 copies, and went to No. 14 from No. 17.
Topping the Billboard album chart was the new entry from the boy band One Direction, "Midnight Memories," which sold 546,000 copies in its first week.
