While "The Producers" is about theatrical producer Max Bialystock and accountant Leo Bloom's scheme to make money by overselling shares of the potential profit of a purposeful Broadway flop, the actual Broadway musical was anything but. The 1968 film was the first to be directed by Mel Brooks, and won him an Oscar for story and screenplay. The stage adaptation ran on Broadway from 2001 to 2007, grossing over $288 million. "The Producers" won 12 Tony Awards out of its 15 nominations in 2001, including the award for best musical. The musical was adapted into a movie in 2005.
