NEW YORK -- After a hiatus of several seasons, Los Angeles based designer Trina Turk returned to New York Fashion Week over the weekend, showing her fall-winter 2013 collection titled "California Modern" in a presentation at Lincoln Center.
"We've upped the sophistication of what we're doing," Turk said. "And we wanted to show our fall collection because we thought it would be unexpected," she added, acknowledging the brand's reputation for resort clothes.
The inspiration: California today, according to the show notes. In other words, no retro.
The look: Borrowed from the boys, mixed textures, bold colors (plum, pink, orange, gold, blue, black) and menswear-inspired prints. An elegant plum crepe jumpsuit. ("Our customers respond to jumpsuits," Turk said.) A boxy coat in a fun collage tweed developed by the designer, worn over cognac-colored leather pants. A swirly print blouse and trousers combo worn with a long, curly lamb vest. A cheerful satin stripe column dress. A brown and navy color block coat over navy walking shorts
The verdict: Polished but with a sunny sense of humor. Turk has indeed upped her game, and it's great to see her back in New York.
