Wichita State University basketball began in 1906 but it was under coach Ralph Miller in 1951 that the school began to build a successful basketball program. Miller had played for Kansas University as a student and brought Phog Allen's philosophy to Wichita. By the time Miller left in 1964, the Shockers had won 220 games, three NIT berths and played in the NCAA tournament in 1964.
