Jim Ryun broke the four minute mile as a junior at Wichita's East High School in 1954. His time was stunning as only a few of the greatest runners in the world had broken the four minute "barrier" a decade earlier. Ryun made the U.S. Olympic team in 1964. He broke the world record for the mile once in high school and three times while at Kansas University. His final world record for the mile was 3:51.1 in 1967.
