Jay Cronk

Jay Cronk, 58, is photographed at Union Station in New Haven. He was a national official with the Machinists Union in Maryland until he declared his candidacy to challenge the international president, Thomas Buffenbarger. He was fired from his union job and returned to work as a Metro North mechanic, where he was on leave for 22 years. Now, Cronk and his slate of challengers are trying to do what no one has done in 52 years -- mount a challenged to IAM leadership. To get past the first hurdle, he needs to win the endorsement of 25 of the 600 locals across the country.
