Getting ready for giveaway

Volunteers Christopher Leatherman, left, and Ryan Bingaman carry boxes and bags of Christmas stockings on Dec. 14 in preparation for the Salvation Army Toys for Tots give-away Thursday. Christopher is an eighth-grade student at Grace Academy and Bingaman is a work-release inmate at Maryland Correctional and Training Center. Inmates from MCTC Pre-Release Unit and Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services staff are helping the Salvation Army and Toys for Tots prepare for the give-away through Wednesday by boxing food and organizing the toys. Salvation Army Major Karen Lyle said that 1,149 families are eligible, including 3,800 people overall and 2,400 youth. Toys for Tots Chairman Jim Mills said that about 25,000 toys are to be given away, including about 14,000 provided by Toys for Tots. Of that amount, 99 percent were donated.
