Ricky Durham knows diseases and health conditions can make dating difficult.
His brother James Keith Durham had Crohn's disease and weighed between 75 and 125 pounds at times. A healthy weight for him would have been about 150 pounds, Ricky says. He also had a colostomy bag.
"He was a good-looking boy and he could meet girls very easily, but he just didn't know when to tell people he had a colostomy bag," Ricky said recently by phone. "So I thought that maybe if he met someone else who had Crohn's disease or a colostomy bag, he wouldn't have to go through all that."
Keith died in July 2005, but Prescription4Love.com, the dating Web site that Ricky created in his honor, lives on.
It originally catered to singles living with any of 11 diseases or health conditions. Today, the site includes 36 diseases and conditions, ranging from arthritis, allergies and autism to Tourette's syndrome, blindness and alcoholism.
More than 8,000 people from around the world have used the site, Ricky says. Herpes and HIV are the most commonly cited categories. The cost is $9.95 a month.Copyright © 2015, CT Now
