Pick a pink run or walk
There are miles and miles of ways to support breast cancer research and treatment. And not only are you doing something to help other women, preparing for one of these events will get you into shape too.

Here's a glance at some of the more popular run/walking events coming up in October.

  • Thanks to the loving dedication of her sister Nancy G. Brinker, the Susan G. Komen for the CureĀ® global breast cancer movement was launched. In 2008, the foundation celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the Komen Race for the CureĀ®, the largest series of 5k runs/fitness walks in the world. This year, you can participate in one of hundreds of 5k walks, marathons, relays and three-day/60-mile strolls. You can even create your own Passionately Pink for the Cure event. Go to www.komen.org for details.

  • From coast to coast, there are nine Avon Walks for Breast Cancer in 2009. This month, hoof it in New York City Oct. 10 to 11 or Charlotte, N.C. Oct. 24 to 25. Info at www.avonwalk.org or call 800-541-WALK.

  • Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the American Cancer Society's premier series to raise awareness and dollars to fight breast cancer. Every state hosts these noncompetitive walks that range from 3 to 5 miles with most requiring no registration fee or fundraising minimum. Find an MSABC event at http://makingstrides.acsevents.org.
