This weekend in L.A. a group of fitness instructors have teamed up with an award-winning scenographer and celebrities to put together RIDE!, a "mind-bending-and-body-challenging-event" that combines lights music and video projection with a spin class.

Spinning has turned into one of the most popular forms of class exercise in the nation. Some instructors are going to great lengths to make classes a more fun and interactive experience for their students.

Even without the bright lights and club music, and it's no wonder so many are fans breaking a sweat on a bike.

Here are just a few of the benefits of choosing spin over some other forms of exercise:
  • Spinning has both anaerobic and aerobic benefits. You are strengthening your muscles while building up endurance and your cardiovascular fitness.
  • It's a great way to quickly and efficiently burn calories. The best way to see this as it happens is with a heart rate monitor. For those of you who are worried about your heart rate climbing too quickly, a heart rate monitor is perfect to show you if you need to back off or push harder.
  • You are in control of your gears so you can work yourself as hard as you want or be as lenient as you want.
  • One of the best reasons to get on a spin bike is the benefits of working out body parts you are completely unaware of using. You are constantly changing your body positioning and with the proper instructor you'll end up with abs just as good as your calves.
If you haven't tried spinning yet, give it a chance. Group classes can be helpful motivators. Who knows, you may even get a few friends out of the deal.
