A commenter named dpnowell is upset. "Are you serious? You weigh 165 pounds and write an article about your 'beer belly'?" he complained after my blog post Monday.
Poor dpnowell, and poor America. Because this is part of the problem.
A guy says he wants to lose some weight before the end of the year, maybe change the way he does things -- and instead of getting a little support from his friend, the Internet, the Web proves, once again, to be an unreliable amigo.
At the beginning of January, I weighed 170.5 pounds. Not obese, but my belly had a noticeable basketball stuck in it. I made do.

Some people can pull off their pudge. They can disguise their little baby.
Big shirts. Sweatshirts.
But then you find yourself on a rooftop hotel pool and you take your shirt off , and people cannot believe their eyes.
It's adorable, no doubt, as most babies are. But after a while, it becomes time to chase it away.
A month ago on a day like today, I would have eaten a half a pizza for dinner, two big tacos from Grand Central Market, and half a pint of Ben & Jerry's for dessert. And a bag or two of M&M's and a few regular Cokes.
The next day would have involved at least one trip to the drive-through, if not two, if I had an early start.
Since this series began, I haven't gone to a drive-through once. Don't feel cheated, commenter, feel good for your Internet friend.
According to this totally random and relatively anonymous Web page, even though I should feel happy to be down to 165, I still have about 15 pounds to go.

One thing I have learned is that the saying "a body in motion stays in motion" is true. When I got home, all I wanted to do was put on my shorts and run around Hollywood.
The exciting Clippers game made it hard to leave the house until after 10 p.m., but once out there, I ran around for about an hour, which is 5 to 6 miles.
It's very easy to find interesting things to look at during such a run, but my favorite came from the marquee on the Music Box on Hollywood Boulevard.
"IT IS WHAT IT IS / DEAL WITH IT", declared the sign. And I kept running.
Encourage your friends. They're dealing with stuff.
Diet: Four little cat cookies (13 of them equal 120 calories) and water for breakfast. Chicken Koobideh and a little rice with a Diet Coke for lunch. And the most fascinating microwave meal for dinner: Terri-Yaki Chicken made with Nooodle (yes, three O's). It was a chicken breast, carrot and mushroom dish over noodles made of yam flour. Delicious and only 80 calories.
