The American Heart Association has used its heart-check symbol in grocery stores for 17 years. It has now expanded its use to restaurants with the Heart-Check Meal Certification program.
The first restaurant chain to to apply and meet the nutritional criteria required in order to display the red-and-white heart check mark is Subway. Customers will find the Heart-Check on all "Fresh Fit" meals featuring a variety of 6-inch subs served with apples and water; also Kids' meals with apple slices and 12-ounce low-fat milk as well as some salads and the sweet onion dressing.
These meals meat the AHA's nutritional criteria for levels of sodium, calories, cholesterol, saturated fat and trans fats.
