Meredith was a poet and university professor, according to the Los Angeles Times. During World War II, he joined the U.S. Navy as a flier. Meredith re-enlisted in the Korean War, receiving two Air Medals. Afterwards, he taught at Connecticut College for nearly 30 years. Meredith was Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress from 1978 to 1980, and in 1988 he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Meredith died in New London.
