William Howard Best (May 11, 1924 - August 20, 2006)

Best was Windsor's first black police officer and a community activist, as stated by the Connecticut Freedom Trail. He served the Windsor Police Department for 18 years until a job injury forced him to retire. A lifelong Windsor resident, Best's family has owned property in Windsor since the 1870s, when his great-grandparents, James and Charlotte Thompson, bought land in Hayden Station.
