The UConn men's hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with Union before a crowd of 1,048 at Freitas Ice Forum for the home debut of coach Mike Cavanaugh.
Billy Latta and Tyler Bouchard scored second-period goals for the Huskies (0-2-1), who trailed 2-0 after the first. UConn was coming off a pair of losses last weekend at Minnesota State.
Matt Grogan, who took over as UConn's top goalie midway through last season and returned for a fifth year of eligibility, was spectacular. He made 47 saves. It is the second consecutive game and the fourth time in Grogan's career that he has made 40-plus saves.
UConn's five-game home stand continues with the Atlantic Hockey opener against Army Nov. 1.
Mark Bennett and Mike Vecchione scored in the first period for Union (1-2-2). These teams skated to a 2-2 tie in last season's UConn home opener, too.
The Huskies were outshot 49-23 and have now been out-shot 128-57.
