Delegates from 50 nations gathered in San Francisco on June 26, 1945, to sign the United Nations charter, establishing the international organization to promote peace, human rights and social progress. The charter was ratified in October 1945 and the first U.N. General Assembly met in London on Jan. 10, 1946.
