Amelia Earhart set down her red monoplane in Oakland, Calif., on January 12, 1935, becoming the first person to fly solo across the Pacific Ocean. The Courant reported: "She came through neatly but only after fighting a variety of weather and giving California watchers an uneasy three hours during which her position was not known."
