March 10, 1971: Grant Named Head Of Union Army

General Ullysses S. Grant was presented with his commission as Lieutenant-General of the Army by President Abraham Lincoln on March 9, 1864. The next day, the president formally signed the papers that gave Grant command of the Union Army.
