March 2, 1877: Hayes Declared President

Republican Rutherford B. Hayes lost the popular vote in the 1876 presidential election to Democrat Samuel J. Tilden. Due to voting controversies in several states, 20 electoral votes were contested. Congress created an Electoral Commission which decided the election for Hayes by one electoral vote.
