Susanne K. Langer (December 20, 1895 - July 17, 1985)

Langer was one of the first women to make an academic career in the field of philosophy and the first to be considered a major American philosopher, according to the <a href="http://articles.courant.com/1996-09-24/news/9609240242_1_women-s-groups-outstanding-women-connecticut-women-s-hall">Hartford Courant</a>. She is best known for her 1942 book, Philosophy in a New Key. Langer was a long-time resident of Old Lyme, Conn., and professor of philosophy at Connecticut College in New London.
