The Hartford baseball team lost the opener of a doubleheader against Stony Brook Friday afternoon, 2-1 at Fiondella Field.
If Hartford win today's second game, and wins against tomorrow in the regular season finale, the Hawks would make the America East tournament field for the first time in history.
All four meetings between these teams have been decided by one run this season, and Stony Brook has won three of them. Frankie Vanderka (8-3) went the distance for the Seawolves in Friday's seven-inning game, allowing just four hits. (The second game is scheduled for nine innings.)
Hartford's Anthony Mannuccia (2-4) gave up seven hits in 5 1/3 innings. Brian Murphy recorded the final five outs.
The Hawks took a 1-0 on a single by James Alfonso in the second. Stony Brook scored both of its runs in the third -- on RBI singles by Tanner Nivins and Kevin Krause.
Game 1 Box Score.
Game 2 starters: Hartford lefty Sean Newcomb (5-4, 3.82) vs. Stony Brook lefty Daniel Zamora (2-7, 4.94).
