Oh, How I Miss Joan Rivers' Bad Manners On The Red Carpet

I attended the Academy Awards this year, as I usually do.

For the record I was wearing a gray T-shirt and a pair of plaid flannel pajama bottoms from the Ocean State Job Lot collection.

I looked fabulous, at least that's what the person doing the Red Carpet interview would have gushed. I know this because this is what the people doing Red Carpet interviews always gush.

I'm not as big a fan of the Red Carpet pre-game shows as I used to be. I really liked it when Joan Rivers used to slice and dice the celebrities fashion choices, but now it's just one big sycophant fest.

From a strictly male perspective, I also lost interest in the Red Carpet when the cleavage era passed. I once wrote that there are two reasons why men watch the Academy Awards — cleavage. I doubt that has changed.

If you are a baby boomer, the Oscars is an interesting stage to see how various stars have dealt with aging over the years. Some have done so gracefully (Meryl Streep). Some have gone kicking and screaming (I couldn't pick Rene Zellweger out of a lineup). And some should really think about having a little work done (Tommy Lee Jones).

Also, what's with all the 50-ish guys with the shoulder length — "Don't hate me because I'm beautiful" — hair? Is some kind of "Brave Heart" look coming back?

I saw several of the movies that were nominated for awards. My least favorite was "Les Miserables." Don't get me wrong, I thought some of the performances were terrific, it's just the plot is such a downer and I can't see paying good money to be depressed. That said, I do go to Red Sox games.

The one scene in "Les Miz" I did identify with was the one in which Anne Hathaway has her hair chopped off. It brought back memories of when I used to go to this barber who drank.

I want to believe the reason "Lincoln" didn't win Best Picture was because the writer of the script knowingly portrayed Connecticut as being pro slavery when, in fact, the opposite was true."His truth is marching on …"

Finally, in the spirit of the Academy Awards I just want to take a brief moment to thank everyone involved with the production of this column blah-blah-blah.

Is anyone else hearing the theme from "Jaws?"
