I am currently reading the October/November issue of AARP The Magazine.
I don't remember ever subscribing to AARP The Magazine, but then I don't remember ever ordering several of the magazines I now get.
Last year I started getting Sports Illustrated in the mail along with Car & Driver. I have no idea why. Yes, I have a car and yes I am a driver, but I have never been so interested in the relationship that I would want to read a magazine dedicated to the subject.
On the other hand, sending me Sports Illustrated was a good call on the part of whoever is making these calls. I really missed it when it abruptly ended.
Here's a freaky one. Earlier this year Golf Magazine suddenly showed up in the mail. Now, I've pretty much avoided golf my entire adult life, so the magazine quickly found its way into the recycling pile.
Then, out of nowhere, I started playing golf at the beginning of the summer and have become somewhat obsessive about it. Also, I recently bought a new car. Coincidence, or is there something cosmic going on here?
What if there is some kind of "Twilight Zone" thing happening where I start getting a magazine as a precursor to developing an interest in the magazine's specialty?
This is a frightening thought given there are magazines on almost every conceivable thing.
Suppose one day the mail brought issues of Hoard's Dairyman, and Beer Magazine. Would this portend a future of herding cows half in the shoot?
Or what if Soap Opera Digest and Martha Stewart Living arrived simultaneously? Would this condemn me to afternoons of daytime television on a stylish couch?
And I don't even want to think of what I might become if my unsolicited magazine lineup included Cigar Aficionado, Tattoo and Pro Wrestling Illustrated.
Granted, there is also the possibility the magazine foreshadowing could take my life in a positive direction, although something like that almost never happens to me. But, what if out of the blue I started getting such magazines as Barron's or Money.
While I don't know what force is guiding my unsolicited magazines, if I could put in a request for future subscriptions, any or all of the following would be welcomed: Yachting Magazine, Jetset Magazine, Conde' Nast Traveler and/or Palm Beach Illustrated.
