Calhoun took up the cause of autism after his granddaughter was diagnosed at 2, lending his name to the advocacy and research group, Autism Speaks.
At nearly every game, he has worn a blue puzzle piece ¿ the group¿s symbol ¿ on his lapel.
¿He¿s a huge icon not only in New England and Connecticut, but in college basketball nationally,¿ said Lauren Amendola, the group¿s Connecticut director. ¿That¿s exactly what we need. It brings us a whole different audience. ¿
She adds: ¿A lot of people know what that blue pin means autism and that he supports us,¿ Amendola said.
Calhoun helped launch a fundraiser, CardioRaiser: Workout For Autism Speaks, this year that raised $75,000 for research.
