The original lighthouse on Plum Island is a familiar site to boaters traveling through Plum Gut. The current lab facility on Plum Island is surrounded by fences and No trespassing signs. Members of Connecticut's congressional delegation, Senator Richard Blumenthal and Rep. Joe Courtney, boarded a boat from The Sound School and took a tour around Plum Island Wednesday afternoon. The 843 acre island of wild beach and dune bluffs off of Long Island is home to a federal animal disease testing research facility but it is now for sale. The facility will be relocated to Kansas and the government is hoping that a private sale will help pay for the new lab. Sen. Blumenthal and Rep. Courtney do not want the island sold to private parties but would like to see it kept as it is as a park and wildlife habitat. In the background are the lab buildings used for animal disease testing.
