The head of the Connecticut Convention & Sports Bureau will retire in August.
Michael Van Parys, the bureau's president, announced Thursday that he will leave Aug. 8. He led the organization as it expanded from a regional to statewide entity in 2012. He had been executive vice president of sales and president at the former Greater Hartford Convention & Visitors Bureau.
H. Scott Phelps, who retired as the Greater Hartford bureau's president in May 2010, will replace Parys on an interim basis.
The bureau is the state's official sales and marketing organization for meetings and sporting events.
Peter J. Berry, CAE, chairman of the board of directors, praised Parys. "Michael has done an outstanding job. … Not only did he coordinate the extensive transition to a statewide organization, but in the second year of operation alone, the Connecticut Convention & Sports Bureau exceeded its goals with the state, bringing more than 230,000 room night leads for our lodging members."Copyright © 2015, CT Now
