Family and friends remember the homeless during the National Homeless Persons' Memorial Service and Candlelight Vigil held in the Erwin Chapel of South Church in New Britain Wednesday. Held on the eve of the winter solstice, the first day of winter and the longest night of the year, the service was a remembrance for homeless individuals who have died in New Britain in the past year. Their eight names were spoken aloud by the Rev. B. Suzy Rivera, outreach programs director for Friendship Service Center, the Rev. George Harris, lead pastor for South Congregational-First Baptist Church, and Major Stanley Newton of the Salvation Army, New Britain.
