Mark Van Doren (June 13, 1894 - December 10, 1972)

<a href="http://articles.courant.com/2005-07-21/entertainment/0507210175_1_charles-van-doren-lecture-series-quiz-show">Doren</a> was a critic and poet, as well as a professor of English at Columbia University for nearly 40 years. His students at Columbia included such poets as Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and John Hollander. Doren died in Torrington. His son, Charles Van Doren, is an author and editor.
