Cherry Cooney, mother of Kenneth R. Ireland Jr., describes how her son burned all his trial transcripts in the backyard on the first Thanksgiving he spent at home after being released from prison after serving 21 years of a 50-year sentence for a rape and murder he did not commit. She was testifying at a hearing before the Office of the Claims Commissioner at the Legislative Office Building Tuesday. Ireland, who was exonerated by the Connecticut Innocence Project five years ago, is seeking up to $8 million in compensation from the state for his wrongful incarceration.
