If a Hartford area minor league football team owner depends on people like me, he's doomed. I'm a football fan, but I've never been to a Colonials game. I'm not a fan of minor league football. That's the niche that Uconn football fills in my life. I will sit out in the cold and rain for Uconn, or the Chicago Bears, and maybe the New York Jets, but the Colonials, no thanks. I'm not sure why. I'll have to examine that.
Maybe I don't want to see a bunch of has-beens. Maybe I don't want to see a bunch of no-talent wannabes. I don't mean to be hard on the players. Their dreams are no less important than any other aspiring athlete. Maybe I'm just not that much of a football fan after all.
That's it! It's not football I'm fascinated with, it's specific teams. Same with baseball. I won't watch the ESPN Sunday night baseball game of the week just because it's baseball, but I'll watch if the Yankees are playing and watch them as much as I can all season long.
I'll watch the Bears play when they're on local TV, and I have the NFL channel for games I can't get in Connecticut, but I won't watch Monday night football unless it involves a team, or a player, I'm interested in.
Professional sports for me is mostly about specific teams. I loved the Stanley Cup playoffs between Boston and Vancouver but if the Bruins weren't in it, I wouldn't have given it two seconds. Same with the Celtics. I'm not much of a pro basketball fan, but if the Celtics are hot, I'll watch a game or two. I watch many of the Uconn men and women basketball games, but never a basketball game involving other schools. I guess I'm a highly discriminating sports fan.Copyright © 2015, CT Now
