Joseph Roswell Hawley, a lawyer who edited the Hartford Evening Press, later consolidated it with The Hartford Courant, which he bought in 1867, and served as editor. Samuel Clemens sought to buy an ownership share in The Courant but was rebuffed. A brigadier general with the Union Army during the Civil War, Hawley also was the 42nd governor of Connecticut and later represented the state in Congress, serving in the House of Representatives and later in the Senate.
