Brainard was born in New London. He studied at Yale College and then proceeded to study the law, according to the Academy of American Poets. After abandoning his law practice in Middletown, he assumed editorial charge of The Connecticut Mirror, a newspaper in Hartford. In 1825 a volume of poems was published by Brainard, mostly made up from the columns of his newspaper. After his death, multiple editions of his writings were published.
