Jan. 21, 1954: USS Nautilus Launched

"More than 15,000 persons witnessed the launching of a new era in naval history," on Jan. 21, 1954, when the world's first nuclear-powered submarine, the USS Nautilus, was launched from Electric Boat in Groton. First Lady Mamie Eisenhower christened the sub, sending it into the Thames River.<br><br>
