Area High School Girls Basketball Preview Capsules

Preview capsules for area high school girls basketball teams that responded to The Courant's request for information [Compiled by Lori Riley]:



Last year: 12-11

Coach: Dan Matthews

Top player: Corrine Williams, jr. G/F.

A note: Williams, a 6-foot guard/forward, averaged 14.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks for the Warhawks.


Last year: 25-2, Class L runner-up

Coach: Kirk Murad

Top players: Murphy Murad, sr. G; Holly Worski, jr. G; Olivia Worski, sr. G/F; Morgan Lawlor, jr. F/G.

A note: Four starters graduated from the team that went to the Mohegan Sun and lost in the Class L finals to Bacon Academy but E.O. Smith will be solid again with Murad (7.9 ppg, 4.2 apg) back at point guard.


Last year: 4-16

Coach: Sean Sweeney

Top players: Justyce Jenkins, sr. C/F; Nicole St. Amand, jr. G; Kaitlyn Peck, sr. G; Abby Shaughnessy, jr. F.

A note: Jenkins is the only returning starter for the Falcons.


Last year: 16-7

Coach: Tim Guernsey

Top player: Sarah Veuilleux, jr. F.

A note: The Sachems, which lost to Pomperaug in the Class L quarterfinals, could go far again this year and are a threat to win the conference.


Last year: 4-16

Coach: Israel Caban

Top players: Courtney Joubert, jr. G; Daphne Botteron, jr. G/F; Danielle Wenwell, jr. F; Katherine Cutting, jr. F.

A note: Team will be strong defensively but needs to improve its rebounding.


Last year: 22-4, Class M runner-up

Coach: Vinnie Cianfarani

Top players: Ashley Clawson, sr. G; Chelsea Domian, jr. G; Jackie Foreman, sr. F; Sammie Olson, sr. F.

A note: School's all-time leading scorer and Gatorade Player of the Year Kristin Schatzlein graduated, along with three others starters, and Eagles have a new coach in Windsor's Cianfarani, but Tolland has a talented group of younger players who will still make noise in the conference and the state playoffs.

Coach: Holly Coleman

Top players: Elle Fontanazza, sr. g; Becky Hoisl, sr. G; Shelly Rodgers, so. G.

A note: Fontanazza leads the team in free throw percentage (68), Hoisl in steals (3 per game) and Rodgers in three-pointers (two per game).


Last year: 12-11

Coach: Russ Crist

Top players: Jamie Bartucca, sr. G; Sophie Borg, so. F; Brittany Belisle, sr. G; Allison Walsh, sr. F.

A note: Only one starter graduated and Bartucca, who averaged 9 points and 4.5 steals last year, is back, along with Borg (10 ppg, 5 rpg).


Last year: 14-8

Coach: Jeffrey Kaplowitz

Top players: Allyson Swaby, jr. G; Emily Apter, sr. F; Alannah Boyle, sr. G; Colleen Corrigan, sr. G.

A note: Swaby averaged 12 points and six steals for a team which has good height, speed and experience but needs to replace rebounding lost to graduation.


Last year: 7-13

Coach: Tasha Manzie

Top players: Nikira Hooks, jr. F; Faith Ford, sr. C; Eliannie Sola, sr. G; Ginelle Martinez, sr. G.

A note: Four starters graduated but the leading scorer (Hooks) and leading rebounder (Ford) are back.


Last year: 17-8

Coach: Karl Herbert

Top players: Alyssa Reaves, sr. C; Alecia Dulaire, sr. F; Allison Connors, sr. G; Meghan Schuppe, sr. G; Jacqui Denver, sr. G.

A note: Returns eight seniors, including University of Hartford-bound Reaves, but injuries to point guards may hamper Northwest in the early going.



Last year: 17-8

Coach: Al Lewis

Top players: Liz Brasa, sr. F; Kara Noble, sr. F; Genny Rock, sr. G; Katie Mathieu, jr. G.

A note: All five starters graduated so team is inexperienced.


Last year: 4-16

Coach: Matt Rondinone

Top players: Emily Burr, sr. G; Michaela Hunt, sr. G; Shanta Lammie, sr. F.

A note: Burr was an all-conference player for the Hornets, which return their entire team and have a new coach.


Last year: 20-7, CCC tournament champions

Coach: Brian Fleming

Top players: Courtney Latham, sr. G; Ashley Mulryan, sr. G; Olivia Still, sr. F; Kerstan Mahland, jr. F.

A note: Latham (13.8 ppg, 5.7 rpg, heading to Boston University) returns to lead a solid group of players who should challenge for the conference title again.


Last year: 23-4

Coach: John Reiser

Top players: Zanaija Gibson, sr. G; Megan Jordan, sr. G; Makenna Carella, jr. C; Sam Atkins, sr. F.

A note: The Indians, which advanced to the Class LL semifinals, lost all five starters, including Player of the Year Ashley Perez, to graduation.


Last year: 12-8

Coach: Don Leclerc

Top players: Olivia Bolden, Jr. F; Christina Rozie, jr. G; Kaitlyn LaBonte, jr. F

A note: Lost two starters. Defense and quickness should be strengths.


Last year: 25-2, Class M champions

Coach: Wendell Williams

Top players: Alyssa Stewart, jr. F; Amanda Stewart, jr. F; Zi'Tazhia Parker, sr. G; Catherine Cruz, sr. G.

A note: Could be a bit of a rebuilding year after losing Kenya Stewart and Fifi Walcott, but Weaver will still be hard to beat with the Stewart twins crashing the boards and blocking shots and Parker shooting threes.


Last year: 1-19

Coach: Michelle Libby

Top players: Carrie Polomsky, sr. G; Sara Hubbard, sr. G; Lauren Glendon, jr. G; Kelly McDonald, jr. G.

A note: Team is quick but small and inexperienced.


Last year: 11-9

Coach: Dr. George Curry

Top players: Nyah Charles, sr. F; Molly Curry, sr. G; Sydnee Over, sr. C.

A note: Windsor has a new coach in Curry, who plans to have his team focus on defense.



Last year: 21-5

Coach: Sheila King

Top players: Courtney Trazsko, sr. G/F; Kailene Rampone, sr. G/F; Paige Young, sr. F; Ashley Malloy, sr. G/F.

A note: Quick, versatile team which went to the Class L semifinals last year and returns three key players, including Traszko, the leading scorer (10 ppg).


Last year: 11-9

Coach: Rob Smernoff

Top players: DeAsia Lawrence, sr. G/F; Mikaela Coady, jr. F; Rajeen Mayo, jr. G; Marissa Aldieri, jr. G.

A note: Lawrence was an all-conference player who could score her 1,000th point this year and Coady and Mayo are returning starters.


Last year: 11-11

Coach: Jen Micowski

Top players: Kelsey Clemens, jr. F; Katy Dressel, sr. F; Carly Martino, sr. g; Kelley Slabinski, sr. G.

A note: Clemens, who is 6-1, averaged 10.8 points and 3.5 rebounds for a team which lost three starters.



Last year: 16-9

Coach: Frank Waters

Top players: Anna Schrecengost, jr. G; Shannon Curry, so. F; Alana Pulling, sr. G; Colleen Norton, sr. F.

A note: Schrecengost leads a young team with size, depth and athleticism.


Last year: 2-18

Coach: Michael Jessie

Top players: Amanda Curvino, sr. G/F; Kat Windsor, sr. g; Alex Martin, jr. G; Erin Detorie, jr. G/F.

A note: A quick deep team which lost no one to graduation and has Curvino, who averaged 11 ppg, back.


Last year: 10-9

Coach: Isabel Caban

Top players: Claire Hall, sr. F; Alyssa Keeney, sr. G; Marina Rose, sr. G; Samantha Roy, jr. F.

A note: Caban is in her first year as coach and has a good group of seniors to work with.


Last year: 6-14

Coach: Tim Doherty

Top players: Kara Dumas, sr.; Eileen Dempsey, sr.; Mairead Loschi, sr.; Sam Daleb, jr.

A note: Only one starter graduated.


Last year: 3-17

Coach: Megan Willis

Top players: Rachel Kaliff, sr. G/F; Maggie Richards, jr. G; Sam Hellyar, sr. F; Olivia Caronna, so. G.

A note: Team lacks varsity experience but is strong defensively and improved last season.


Last year: 24-3

Coach: Laureen Lovetere-Beeler

Top players: Karlee Alves, jr. G; Jess Malone, sr. G; Brittany LeMire, sr. G; Meg Milliken, jr. C.

A note: Ellington lost a lot of scoring with Kelly Conley's graduation (23 ppg) but Alves (who averaged 10 points and six assists) and others should help fill the void.


Last year: 11-12

Coach: Alan Walker

Top players: Kylen O'Hearn, sr. G; Kelsey Charette, sr. G; Emma Panta, sr. G; Diandra DaRosa, jr. G.

A note: DaRosa (20 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 5.3 steals) leads Somers, which only graduated one starter and could make some noise in the NCCC.


Last year: 14-6

Coach: Marcus Williams

Top player: Kayla Mercer, sr. G.

A note: Mercer (7.9 ppg) is the only returning starter for new coach Williams.


Last year: 1-19

Coach: Scott Martin

Top players: Brenna Roy, sr. g; Kelsey Heavener, sr. G; Isabella Randazzo, sr. C/F; Mykayla Perrier, jr. F.

A note: Team returns a good amount of varsity experience but is not very deep and has a first-year coach in Martin.


Last year: 16-4

Coach: Jeremiah Brown

Top players: Alysia Krzanowski, sr. F; Tashua Sotil, jr. G; Merrideth Ouellette, sr. G.

A note: Young but quick and plays an aggressive 3/4 court defense.


Last year: 13-9

Coach: Doug Knowe

Top players: Jessica Kuzmickas, sr. G; Dominique Boyd, so. F; LeeAnn Douglas, sr. G.

A note: Strong defensive team led by Douglas, who shot 71 percent from the FT line last year.



Last year: 23-4, Class S runner-up

Coach: Tammy Millsaps

Top players: DeJane James, so. G; Kiah Gillespie, so. F; Imani Bumpus, sr. G; Taylor Williams, jr. G.

A note: James and Gillespie return from the team that lost to Coginchaug in the Class S final but is looking to make another run at the title.


Last year: 20-5

Coach: Ken Leggo

Top players: Colleen Cosker, sr. G; TaNajia Smith, sr. G; Jackie Ellis, sr. F; Sierra Dockum, sr. G.

A note: Cosker, a 1,000-point scorer who has broken almost every school record, returns to a team that lost one starter.


Coach: Rickey Flagg

Top players: Dominika Jesley Oraris, so. G; Eliana Echtenkamp, jr. F; Ajia Coleman, jr. C.

A note: Flagg is a first-year coach and the team is young.


Last year: 11-10

Coach: Polly Innerarity

Top players: Nikia Stewart, sr. C; Jaznay Davenport, jr. G; Essence McDonald, so. G.

A note: Stewart led the team in scoring (13 ppg) and rebounding (20) last year and Davenport was the assist leader and second leading scorer.


Last year: 11-9

Coach: John Lowney

Top players: LaDona Quinn, sr. F; Toria Hill, sr. G; Marleny Guzman, sr. G; Victoria Wilks, sr. G.

A note: Quinn, who averaged 14 points and 17 rebounds per game, leads a senior-laden team.


Last year: 15-7

Coach: Ray Elliott

Top players: Margaret Popp, sr.; Kara Thibodeau, jr. G; Kassiah Sanchez, sr. G; Jillian Bellman, jr. F

A note: Experienced guards return and Bellman in the post but lack of size and depth might hurt.

Coach: Kelly Maher

Top players: Janelle Harrison, jr. C/F; Lindsay Langenauer, sr. F; Kelly Flanigan, sr. G/F; Alexa Riley, sr. G/F.

A note: Maher returns a group of talented players with height and experience which lost to eventual champion Weaver in the Class M semifinals.

Coach: Jim Bombaci

Top players: Marissa Moncata, sr. G; Sammy Waskowitz, sr. G; Tori Peterson, sr. C; Kiley Anderson, jr. F/C.

A note: Graduated three starters and the team is inexperienced but enthusiastic.


Last year: 8-14

Coach: Jenna Schall

Top players: Melissa Martin, sr. G; Lauren Schmittberger, sr. F; Kathryn Kay, jr. G; Annabelle Bass, jr. F.

A note: Martin, Schmittberger and Kay are returning starters and Schall believes team has potential.


Last year: 14-9

Coach: Stephen Woods

Top players: Mia Neas, jr. G/F; Paige Trabucchi, jr. F; Mary Kate Morrison, jr. G/F; Elizabeth Warren, jr. G.

A note: Team lacks size and experience but is quick.


Last year: 18-7

Coach: Nick Chaconis

Top players: Brianna Marconi, sr. G/F; Maria D'Angelo, sr. G/F; Brook Marconi, so. G; Jill Marconi, jr. G.

A note: Lost three to graduation but Portland always has a solid team.

Coach: Tim Tredwell

Top players: Graceann Kraemer, sr. G; Hannah Johnson, sr. F; Maggie Fitzgerald, sr. G; Gianna Amplo, sr. F.

A note: Quick deep team but does not have a lot of experience.

Top players: Nicole Mierzejewski, jr. C; Taylor Mierzejewski, jr. F; Krista Petersen, jr. G.

A note: About three-quarters of the scoring returns for Lyman, which needs to learn how to finish in games.


Last year: 21-6, Class LL runner-up

Coach: Tim Kohs

Top players: Maria Weselyj, sr. G; Jordyn Nappi, sr. G; Maura Fitzpatrick, so. F; Sheena Landy, sr. G.

A note: Everybody, including Weselyj (16 ppg) and Nappi (11 ppg), returns from the team that lost by two to Career in the LL final.


Last year: 13-9

Coach: Mike Busillo

Top players: Sam Smith, sr. G; Joelle MarkAnthony, so. F; Katie Read, jr. G; Olivia Collette, jr. G.

A note: Three starters graduated from a team that needs to be more consistent in scoring but plays solid defense.

Coach: Joe Mone

Top players: Theresa Swanke, jr. F; Kelly McMahon, so. G; Mekaela Giantonio, so. G; Brianne Sanchez, jr. F.

A note: Team is strong defensively and returns Swanke, who averaged 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Coach: Joe Capitani

Top players: Hope Shevchuck, sr. G; Teagan Dunn, jr. C; Natalie Ruel, so. G.

A note: Big athletic team, including Dunn (a 6-footer), but players don't have a lot of experience playing with each other on a varsity level.



Last year: 5-12

Coach: John Monagan

Top players: Lisa Volg, jr. G; Sage Tourigny, so. C; Brianna Neely, sr. F; Ella Ross, so. F.

A note: Young but deep team with some height in Tourigny (6-2) and Neely (6-0).
