David Owens has been a reporter for The Courant for 23 years and covers crime, courts and breaking news. Before that, he covered communities in western and eastern Connecticut as well as high-profile crimes and trials. Before arriving at The Courant in 1994, he worked a little over five years at The Register Citizen in Torrington, Conn., covering small towns such as Winsted, Hartland, Colebrook, Norfolk, North Canaan and Salisbury, and the city of Torrington. He's also taught college. He remembers when reporters always had to have change for pay phones, saved stories on floppy disks, wrote stories on Radio Shack portable computers and when fax machines were a great technological innovation. These days he’s embraced new as well as traditional technologies to serve The Courant’s readers online and in print.
