MIDDLETOWN 01/24/13 Jason Chowaniec, of Middlefield, uses his bare hand to remove pieces of ice from a hole where he had set a tip up while ice fishing on Dooley Pond in Middletown during Thursday's frigid weather. Chowaniec,who was fishing with two friends, said they were gearing up for the Tri Lake Ice Fishing Derby in East Haddam this Sunday. "We just layer up," said Chowaniec, explaining how they handle the cold. "Just layer up, embrace it, enjoy it!"
