This session, the state legislature will consider a law that makes public the names and addresses of people who have a pistol permit. I think these kinds of laws are well-intentioned but off the mark. OK, so we know where the guns are in the neighborhood. What do we do with this information? Are we in danger because the nice little old lady next door has a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world?
Guns don't attack like loose pit bulls. Somebody has to pull the trigger. Is society served by knowing who owns guns on the street? I think the only purpose this law would serve is to scare gun owners into thinking this is a prelude to confiscation. Gun owners are already the most frightened people in America. No need to rattle their cages with pointless gun laws.
That little old lady may keep her .44 Magnum in a box on a shelf in the attic, who knows. We sure don't and it's none of our business. I think our legislators should spend their time in this session crafting gun laws that have real meaning other than harassing gun owners.Copyright © 2015, CT Now
