Stratford

By TINA BACHETTI | Hartford Courant HOW IT GOT ITS NAME: Stratford, settled in 1639, was named after the town in England, possibly by William Beardsley, a town founder who had lived in Stratford-upon-Avon during Shakespeare's lifetime. SIKORSKY: Stratford is home to the headquarters of Sikorsky Aircraft Corp., a United Technologies Corp. subsidiary founded in 1925 by Igor Sikorsky, developer of the first successful American helicopter. Sikorsky has supplied the presidential helicopter, Marine One, since the 1950s. FAMOUS RESIDENTS: Notable residents past and present include musicians Javier Colon and Moby; the late actress Nancy Marchand of "Lou Grant" and "The Sopranos"; and ballroom dancer Tony Dovolani of "Dancing With the Stars."
