A Middlebury-based maker of specialty chemicals for the automotive and construction industries said Dec. 12 it will slash its white collar work force by 20 percent, laying off about 500 as order volume declines. Chemtura Corp. employs about 5,000 worldwide, about evenly divided between white collar and production line workers. In Connecticut, the company's work force is about 500, all white collar jobs. As of Dec. 12, the impact of the layoffs in Connecticut hadn't been determined, according to company spokeswoman Debra Durbin.
