Two years before joining the Red Sox as rookies, Fred Lynn and Jim Rice played for the 1973 Bristol Red Sox. Lynn hit .259 in 53 games, joining Bristol after winning the College World Series with Southern Cal. Rice hit 27 homers, thriving in tiny Muzzy Field. Others who passed through Bristol en route to Boston: Wade Boggs, Butch Hobson, Bob Stanley, John Tudor, Bruce Hurst, Rich Gedman, Marty Barrett and Oil Can Boyd. By the way, Babe Ruth played exhibition games at Muzzy Field and legend has it he hit a home run to straightaway center field.
