Ann Petry (October 12, 1908 - April 28, 1997)

Petry was an author who became the first African-American woman with book sales topping one million copies for her novel, The Street.  She was born in Old Saybrook, as stated by the <a href="http://articles.courant.com/1997-05-01/news/9705010015_1_family-life-street-black">Hartford Courant</a>.
