The Hartford women's soccer team has named Arielle Aikens and Raelynn Mikell as its captains for next season. UHart's Dan Ruede tells you all about it in the following press release ...
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – University of Hartford women’s soccer coach John Natale announced the team captains for the 2013 season as seniors Arielle Aikens and Raelynn Mikell. The pair will lead a squad that finished 11-5-3 in 2013 and advanced to the America East Championship game.
“Arielle and Rae have been with our program for four years and exemplify what student athletes represent,” said Natale. “They have excelled both on and off the field and understand what it will take to lead this team to be successful. They will provide great leadership as our senior players and I am looking forward to our 2013 season with these two leading the charge.”
Aikens is a significant force of the Hawks returning front line with the loss of key scorers Amelia Pereira, Caitlin Alves and Caroline Dixon. The loss of those three alone equals 65 percent of the Hawks scoring. As a junior, Aikens played in 18 games, starting in 13, and finished with a goal and four assists for six points.
Mikell represents a key member of the backline as the Hawks look to recover from the loss of back-to-back America East Goalkeeper of the Year Erin Quinlan and their back-line captain Shealagh Begley. Defensively last season, the Hawks gave up just 14 goals in 19 games including only five goals in the America east regular season. Hartford’s defense helped secure nine shutouts in 2012.
Overall, Hartford loses eight seniors with the key offensive returners in 2013 Aikens and Elise Galipo. In her rookie season, Galipo finished second on the team with four goals and three assists for 11 points. Defensively, the Hawks will look to Mikell and second-year players Emma Donnelly and Morgan Berry to lead the back line.
