FABIAN BURNETT, BLOOMFIELD
COACH: Omar McFarlane
ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Anchored Bloomfield's run to its first title since 1950 with 32 goals in just his second season with the program. Had three goals in the Class S championship to help Bloomfield beat Somers, 3-2. Scored with 1:36 left to give the War Hawks the victory. Started to cramp up late in the game and was taken off the field but asked back in and scored the final goal. ... Was named All New England, All State and All-CCC East this season. … Scored six goals in a game against Rocky Hill in September to set a single-game record for the program.
BURNETT SAID: “We knew we had the team to go all the way, so the expectation was to win. If we did everything we were supposed to do, everything would fall in place. … I love soccer and I knew, in this country, that soccer could do a lot for me. … I learned this year that I'm not bigger than the game. The game has more to offer me than I have to offer to the game. I started to even think more. It has helped me become a better person – a better listener, a better leader, given me more confidence. I respect [the game ] more. I had the passion since I was young but it has shaped me into a better person. This game helps me be me.”
McFARLANE SAID: “I want everyone to remember Fabian as a player that led by example – a person that believed when there was nothing to believe in. He was a player that was dedicated and put in hard work and represented not only himself, but his school and his community. … We all knew what type of player he was. We weren't surprised. There can't be a better story to tell than Fabian's story.”
UP NEXT: Is still deciding on colleges but is getting interest from Division I programs. Hopes to make the decision in the next month and has yet to decide on a major.
IN 10 YEARS: “I see myself out of college with my diploma and playing soccer. I'm going to play as a long as I can.”
MISCELLANEOUS: Was born in Jamaica and grew up in Kingston before moving to Bloomfield less than two years ago. Had never been in the United States before moving in July 2011 . …. Practiced one day with the team and first time in two months before playing his first varsity game as a junior. … Started playing soccer at age 4 and was introduced to the game by his father Clive. Remembers getting his first soccer ball when he was 2 and playing after church with his dad.
