The colder weather makes us long for warm, flavorful dishes that can carry us for a while. At Abaté Pizza & Restaurant in North Branford, the menu is chock-full of yummy Italian meals that make a trip out in the cold entirely worth it.
Located on Route 80, Abaté sits near the road in a small, cozy building. Inside is seating for about 30. I visited after one of our recent snowfalls, making the experience all the more homey.
Abaté's menu features familiar Italian foods that will please both casual pasta lovers and Italian-cuisine fiends. We sampled from much of the menu and were served surprisingly large portions for the menu's reasonable prices.
We started with the garlic bread parmigiana ($4) and hot antipasto for two ($11.95). The garlic bread came dangerously close to spoiling our appetites because there was so much of it. The antipasto was perfect for sharing: two triangles of fried mozzarella, four clams casino and four stuffed mushrooms.
For entrees, we went with the spinach salad ($7.95), a heaping pile of green spinach with hard boiled egg, roasted red peppers and crumbled bacon; stuffed eggplant rollatini over penne ($11.95); and gnocchi with meat sauce ($11.25). The bacon on the salad was perfectly cooked (there's nothing I love more on a salad than bacon and eggs). The eggplant rollatini was stuffed with ham, and the gnocchi, one of my favorite Italian dishes, was plentiful and tender. I also had a bowl of the pasta e fagioli ($3.75), which was warm and hearty, and perfect for the snowy weather outside.
Because we always find a way to make room for dessert, my friend and I shared a slice of delicious banana cream pie that came as part of the eggplant rollatini dinner special.
Abaté fittingly serves Foxon Park sodas and sells bottles to go out of a cooler. Our server was prompt and very sweet, and after all that food, I could not believe how low the bill was. Abaté is a great little place for a hot meal.
