Mario Batali

"May the heroic genius Pete Seeger RIP" — @Mariobatali (Wally Skalij / Los Angeles Times)

Mario Batali is looking to expand his restaurant group to the Elm City. The celebrity chef is planning to open a Tarry Lodge eatery in New Haven, according to Yale University's office of New Haven and State Affairs.

The building at 278 Park St. is owned by the St. Thomas More Corp., but Yale has a long-term lease.

"We are indeed working with the Tarry Lodge team to bring them [to New Haven,]" Lauren Zucker, associate vice president and director of New Haven affairs at Yale, confirmed by email. "We are delighted with the level of interest we are seeing from terrific chefs who want to tap into New Haven's strong 'foodie' environment."

This would be Batali's third Tarry Lodge and the second in Connecticut, joining the Westport location that opened in 2011. In Westport, the restaurant is known for upscale Italian fare and gourmet pizzas.

According to the New Haven Register, Yale needs a special exception from the Board of Zoning Appeals to open a 74-seat restaurant on the site, with five extra parking spaces.
