The distillers that brought you the state's first legal moonshine will introduce Connecticut's first barrel-aged whiskey, just in time for the 80th anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition. Onyx Spirits of East Hartford debuts its limited-edition "Secret Stash" Friday, Dec. 6 to select restaurants and liquor stores.
Onyx aged its moonshine in 33 five-gallon charred oak barrels, which added color, flavor and smokiness to the spirits. Each barrel has its own unique flavor profile, the company said in a news release, yielding 33 750ml bottles at 91 proof. Participating retailers were allotted one barrel apiece, with each bottle (priced at about $60) labeled with the barrel number. Two restaurants, Market Grille in Manchester and Krust in Middletown, each received a barrel, according to the company.
"This is finally the moment we’ve been waiting for and we cannot wait for everyone to taste this," said co-founder Adam von Gootkin. "This is history."
