Do you love wings and airplanes? If so, ordering at Wings Over New Haven, or any of Connecticut's Wings Over locations (West Hartford, Newington, Bristol and Storrs) will give you a chuckle. Eating your order will make you go "Mmmm."
Wings Over New Haven prides itself on the quality of their chicken. The wings and boneless tenders are hand-battered, and we're reminded in numerous places that Wings Over does not serve "processed frozen junk." One bite and you'll know that's true. I'm a big fan of the buffalo chicken wrap, which comes with lettuce, tomato and bleu cheese and your choice of one of five buffalo sauce spice levels. Wimpy is the mildest, on up to Cruisin' Altitude, Red Alert, Jet Fuel and my favorite, After Burner. After Burner isn't melt-your-face-off hot, but it's definitely not suitable for the faint of heart. Even for heat addicts, Jet Fuel is still pretty kickin'. For $6.49, you can get a fairly large wrap with mostly chicken inside. For a dollar more, add on an order of crinkle cut fries, or waffle fries for a buck-50.
If you'd rather go the combo route, a Hang Glider of boneless wings, fries and a can of soda will run you $8.99. In the Hang Glider, you get a DC-3 amount of wings. That's more than half a pound (Wings Over sells wings and boneless tenders by weight, not number). We tried a Hang Glider with Cajun BBQ sauce, tangy and sweet and kind of addictive. Aside from the buffalo levels and BBQ flavors, you have your choice of teriyakis, dry rubs and other flavors like sweet chili or hot garlic.
But don't complete your order without adding a milkshake. You might be surprised to learn that Wings Over New Haven has one of the best milkshakes in town. For $3.99, you have your choice of chocolate, strawberry or vanilla. The milkshakes are thick and creamy, not oppressively large or unfinishable. Getting a water as well might be a good idea, but we can't tell you what to do.
