I admit it. I’m a pierogi snob.
I like the ones my grandmother used to make at her church and the ones my friend buys me at a local shop near her home. That’s it.
So when a colleague suggested we have lunch (specifically, eat pierogies) at Staropolska in New Britain, which serves homemade Polish cuisine, I was excited.
Staropolska’s pierogis are delicious, definitely as good as Grandma Sophie’s.
We start with the potato pancake and kielbasa appetizer for $7.75. The kielbasa can be ordered boiled or fried (we chose fried, because, why not). The appetizer was good and definitely big enough to share. Other appetizers include pickled herring ($7.95), pork hocks in aspic ($7.95), mozzarella sticks ($8.50) and wings ($8.25).
For the main course, we ordered the cheese and potato pierogies with bacon bits and onion, AND the blueberry-filled pierogies (because, again, why not), both $10.95. Both were excellent, but the blueberry, with a side of whip cream, could have been dessert.
Other flavors include raspberry-filled, farmers cheese sweet filling, beef and veal, and mushroom and sauerkraut. All pierogies come boiled or fried.
If pierogies aren’t your jam, then you have other options.
My co-worker ordered the flavorful breaded pork chop ($15.95), pounded thin and fried to perfection. Grinder varieties include meatball with tomato sauce and peppers, breaded chicken breast, chicken salad and ham. All are $7.75.
The lunch menu is served Tuesday through Friday until 3 p.m. One thing about Staropolska, you don’t leave hungry.
Staropolska, 252 Broad St., New Britain, is open Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Sunday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. 860-612-1711, staropolska.net.
