Connecticut's largest wine festival returns this weekend, July 26 and 27, to the Goshen Fairgrounds, with wine tastings, food, crafts, wine seminars, live music and entertainment.
The two-day event features representatives from 11 participating Connecticut wineries on hand to pour vintages. Among the attendees are Sunset Meadow Vineyards and Miranda Vineyards of Goshen, Taylor Brooke Winery of Woodstock, Jonathan Edwards Winery of North Stonington, Bishop's Orchards Winery of Guilford, Hopkins Vineyard of Warren, Jones Winery of Shelton, Priam Vineyards of Colchester, White Silo Winery of Sherman, Sharpe Hill Vineyards of Pomfret and DiGrazia Vineyards of Brookfield.
Connecticut specialty food vendors, including cheesemakers from Colchester's Cato Corner Farm; artisan jam and jelly makers Winding Drive of Woodbury; pasta sauce producers Capa di Roma from East Hartford and the Olive Oil Factory of Waterbury will be sampling their wares at the event, said festival manager Sherrie Palmer. Other food is available for purchase, including kettle corn, Italian ice, grilled pizza, barbecue and ice cream.
New this year is a grape stomp competition Sunday at 2 p.m., where contestants will be judged on their stamina and creativity in pummeling the fruit, Palmer said.
For those following the Connecticut Wine Trail, there's a special stamp within the 2014 Passport to CT Wineries for the festival; the participating wineries will not stamp their individual pages at the event.
Tickets are $30, which includes wine and specialty food samplings, a souvenir wine glass and tote bag; a designated driver ticket is $10. Valid ID is required. No pets or outside food/beverage will be allowed at the fairgrounds. There is no re-entry into the event after exiting.
The Connecticut Wine Festival runs Saturday from noon to 7 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. The Goshen Fairgrounds are located a half-mile south of Goshen center on Route 63. For more information, or to buy tickets, visit ctwine.com/wine-festival.
